Editorial biography
Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) was a Dutch Reformed theologian, philosopher, and statesman who profoundly shaped neo-Calvinist thought and modern Reformed theology. As founder of the Free University of Amsterdam (1880), he developed a comprehensive Christian worldview emphasizing God's sovereignty over all spheres of life. His concept of "sphere sovereignty" argued that different societal domains operate under God's direct authority rather than through church mediation. Kuyper's theology stressed common grace alongside special grace, allowing for Christian engagement with culture and society. His influential works include "Lectures on Calvinism" (1898) and "The Work of the Holy Spirit" (1888). Through his integration of Reformed theology with public life, Kuyper demonstrated how belief in God could inform politics, education, arts, and science. His theological legacy continues to influence Reformed communities worldwide, particularly in discussions of Christ's lordship over creation, divine sovereignty, and the relationship between Christianity and culture.
