Editorial biography
Al-Juwayni (1028-1085), known as Imam al-Haramayn, was a prominent Shafi'i jurist and Ash'ari theologian who significantly shaped Islamic philosophical theology. Born in Nishapur, he taught at the Nizamiyyah madrasa in Baghdad and mentored the renowned Al-Ghazali. His masterwork, Kitab al-Irshad (The Book of Guidance), systematically defended rational proofs for God's existence and divine attributes against philosophical and theological challenges. Al-Juwayni refined the cosmological argument through his sophisticated analysis of contingency and necessity, arguing that the universe's temporal origin necessitates an eternal Creator. He developed nuanced positions on divine attributes, human agency, and causation that balanced rational theology with scriptural authority. His methodology of integrating Aristotelian logic with Islamic theology while maintaining orthodox boundaries profoundly influenced subsequent Muslim thought on God's nature and the relationship between reason and revelation.
