Editorial biography

Austin Dacey (born 1972) is an American philosopher and humanist advocate who has contributed to debates on secularism and religious ethics. He received his PhD in philosophy from the City University of New York and has served as a United Nations representative for the International Humanist and Ethical Union. His work focuses on defending secular moral reasoning and challenging the assumption that religion holds a monopoly on ethical wisdom. In The Secular Conscience (2008), Dacey argues against both religious conservatives who claim morality requires faith and secular liberals who privatize conscience, instead advocating for a robust public discourse on ethics that draws from secular sources. He contends that secular thinkers should confidently engage in moral debates without ceding ground to religious authority. Dacey has also written extensively on freedom of expression, Islamic philosophy, and the relationship between reason and religious belief in pluralistic societies.
