Editorial biography
Basil Mitchell (1917-2011) was a British philosopher of religion who served as Nolloth Professor of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion at Oxford University from 1968 to 1984. A central figure in analytic philosophy of religion, Mitchell helped establish the discipline's academic credibility in post-war Britain. His influential work "The Justification of Religious Belief" (1973) argued that religious belief could be rationally justified through cumulative case reasoning rather than strict deductive proof. Mitchell defended a sophisticated form of theism that acknowledged the problem of evil while maintaining that religious faith could be reasonable despite not being demonstratively certain. He emphasized the role of parables and metaphors in religious understanding and argued that faith involves personal commitment that goes beyond purely intellectual assent. As editor of "Faith and Logic" (1957), Mitchell brought together Oxford philosophers examining religious language and belief, significantly shaping subsequent debates in philosophy of religion.
