Editorial biography
Charles Templeton (1915-2001) was a Canadian evangelist, author, and agnostic who became a prominent figure in debates about religious faith and doubt. Initially a successful Christian evangelist and close associate of Billy Graham, Templeton co-founded Youth for Christ International in 1945. After attending Princeton Theological Seminary (1948-1951), he experienced a crisis of faith, eventually rejecting Christianity and embracing agnosticism. His book "Farewell to God: My Reasons for Rejecting the Christian Faith" (1996) provided a detailed account of his intellectual journey away from belief, examining biblical inconsistencies, the problem of evil, and scientific challenges to religious claims. Templeton's transformation from celebrated preacher to thoughtful skeptic made him a significant voice in late twentieth-century discussions about the rationality of religious belief, illustrating the complex relationship between faith, reason, and personal experience in the modern quest for meaning.
