Editorial biography

D. H. Mellor (1938-2020) was a British philosopher who made significant contributions to metaphysics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of mind, with important implications for philosophy of religion. As Professor of Philosophy at Cambridge University (1986-1999), Mellor developed influential theories of causation, time, and probability that challenged traditional theological assumptions. His work on the metaphysics of time, particularly his defense of the B-theory of time in "Real Time" (1981) and "Real Time II" (1998), had profound implications for debates about divine temporality, foreknowledge, and providence. Mellor's naturalistic approach to metaphysics and his arguments against backwards causation posed challenges to certain theological doctrines, including divine action and miracles. While not primarily focused on philosophy of religion, his rigorous analytical approach to fundamental metaphysical questions provided important frameworks for understanding the coherence of theistic claims about God's relationship to time, causation, and the natural order.
