Daniel McKaughan

Daniel McKaughan (1975–present) is an American philosopher specializing in philosophy of religion and epistemology. He received his PhD in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame in 2007. McKaughan is Professor of Philosophy at Boston College, where he has taught since 2007. His research examines the nature of faith, trust, and hope in religious contexts, particularly exploring how these attitudes differ from belief and their epistemic status. He has made significant contributions to debates about pragmatic encroachment in epistemology and its applications to religious commitment. His notable works include "Authentic Faith and Acknowledged Risk: Dissolving the Problem of Faith and Reason" (2013) and numerous articles in journals such as Faith and Philosophy and Religious Studies. McKaughan's work challenges traditional epistemological approaches to faith, arguing that religious commitment can be rational even when it involves acknowledging significant epistemic risk. He has also written on divine hiddenness and the relationship between faith and doubt in religious life.
