Editorial biography
Ali Dashti (1896-1982) was an Iranian scholar, journalist, and senator who made significant contributions to critical Islamic studies through his controversial examination of Muhammad's prophetic career. His most influential work, "Twenty Three Years: A Study of the Prophetic Career of Muhammad," written in the 1930s but not published until after the Iranian Revolution, applies historical-critical methodology to Islamic sources. Dashti challenged traditional Muslim historiography by analyzing the Quran and Hadith through rationalist and modernist lenses, questioning supernatural elements and examining Muhammad's life within its historical and psychological contexts. His work represents a pivotal moment in twentieth-century Islamic thought, advocating for a demythologized understanding of Islamic origins. Dashti's critical approach to religious texts and his emphasis on reason over tradition significantly influenced debates about the nature of revelation, prophecy, and the relationship between historical criticism and religious faith in modern Islamic discourse.
