Editorial biography
John William Dawson (1820-1899) was a Canadian geologist and paleontologist who served as principal of McGill University from 1855 to 1893. A devout Presbyterian, Dawson emerged as one of the most prominent scientific critics of Darwinian evolution in the late 19th century. His work "Modern Ideas of Evolution as Related to Revelation and Science" (1890) exemplified his efforts to reconcile scientific discoveries with biblical revelation, arguing that the geological record supported special creation rather than evolutionary theory. Dawson maintained that true science would never contradict scripture and criticized what he viewed as the speculative nature of evolutionary theory. His apologetic writings represented a significant voice in the science-religion dialogue of his era, defending a concordist approach that sought harmony between Genesis and geology while rejecting naturalistic explanations for the origin of species and human consciousness.
