Editorial biography
Michael Dowd (1958-2023) was an American author, speaker, and "evolutionary evangelist" who sought to bridge the divide between religious faith and scientific understanding. His most influential work, Thank God for Evolution (2007), presented a synthesis of evolutionary science and progressive Christianity, arguing that evolution could be understood as God's creative process. Dowd pioneered what he called "evolutionary theology," proposing that traditional religious concepts could be reinterpreted through the lens of cosmic and biological evolution. His approach emphasized that scientific discoveries, rather than threatening faith, could deepen spiritual understanding. Dowd's work contributed to the science-religion dialogue by offering a naturalistic interpretation of Christianity that embraced rather than resisted evolutionary theory. His advocacy for an "evidential faith" influenced progressive religious communities seeking to reconcile scientific knowledge with spiritual practice.
