Editorial biography

Jaroslav Flegr (1958-) is a Czech evolutionary biologist and parasitologist at Charles University in Prague, best known for his controversial research on the behavioral effects of Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans. While primarily a scientist rather than a philosopher or theologian, his work "Frozen Evolution" (2008) challenges neo-Darwinian orthodoxy and has indirect implications for the God debate. Flegr argues that sexual species experience long periods of evolutionary stasis punctuated by brief periods of rapid change, contrasting with traditional gradualist models. His critique of the "selfish gene" paradigm and his emphasis on the role of parasites in evolution offer a more complex view of biological development that some have interpreted as compatible with design arguments. However, Flegr himself maintains a naturalistic worldview and his contributions to philosophy of religion remain tangential, emerging primarily through the theological implications others have drawn from his scientific theories.
