Editorial biography
Kai Nielsen (1926-2021) was a Canadian philosopher who made significant contributions to the philosophy of religion through his defense of atheism and secular ethics. Educated at Duke University and the University of North Carolina, Nielsen spent most of his career at the University of Calgary. His work "Atheism and Philosophy" exemplifies his analytical approach to religious questions, arguing that religious language is cognitively meaningless and that belief in God is neither rationally justified nor necessary for morality. Nielsen developed a form of atheistic humanism, maintaining that ethical life is possible without religious foundations. He engaged in notable debates with theistic philosophers, particularly William Lane Craig, and was known for his clear, accessible writing style that brought rigorous philosophical analysis to questions of God's existence and the nature of religious belief.
