Editorial biography
Norman Kretzmann (1928-1998) was an American philosopher who made significant contributions to medieval philosophy and philosophical theology. Educated at Saint John's University and Johns Hopkins University, he spent most of his career at Cornell University. Kretzmann played a pivotal role in reviving scholarly interest in medieval philosophy, co-founding the journal Medieval Philosophy and Theology and co-editing The Cambridge History of Later Medieval Philosophy. His later work focused on natural theology, producing influential commentaries on Aquinas's Summa Contra Gentiles. In collaboration with Eleonore Stump, he developed innovative approaches to divine eternity, omniscience, and simplicity, particularly through their seminal article "Eternity" (1981), which proposed that God's eternal existence is compatible with temporal creation. His two-volume study The Metaphysics of Theism and The Metaphysics of Creation represents one of the most comprehensive modern analyses of Aquinas's natural theology, demonstrating the continued philosophical viability of classical theistic arguments.
