Editorial biography
Paul Kingsnorth (1972-present) is an English writer and environmental activist who underwent a notable spiritual transformation from secular environmentalism to Orthodox Christianity. Initially known for his environmental journalism and activism, including co-founding the Dark Mountain Project (2009), Kingsnorth's work increasingly engaged with questions of meaning, transcendence, and the sacred in nature. His trilogy of novels (The Wake, 2014; Beast, 2016; Alexandria, 2020) explores themes of apocalypse, mysticism, and divine encounter. His public conversion to Christianity in 2021 marked a significant shift in contemporary discourse on environmentalism and faith. Through essays in publications like First Things and UnHerd, Kingsnorth articulates a critique of secular modernity and argues for recovering a sacred understanding of nature rooted in Christian theology. His journey from "neo-pagan" environmentalist to Orthodox Christian has made him an influential voice in discussions about the relationship between ecological crisis, spiritual emptiness, and the need for divine transcendence in contemporary Western culture.
