Editorial biography
Daniel Pauly (1946-) is a French-born marine biologist and oceanographer who has made significant contributions to fisheries science and marine conservation. While primarily known for developing the concept of "fishing down marine food webs" and creating FishBase, the world's largest database on fish, his work "Darwin's Fishes: An Encyclopedia of Ichthyology, Ecology, and Evolution" (2004) engages with evolutionary theory and its historical development. Though not directly contributing to philosophy of religion or theology, Pauly's scientific work exemplifies the naturalistic worldview that emerged from Darwin's theory of evolution. His encyclopedia documents how Darwin's observations of fish diversity contributed to the development of evolutionary theory, which fundamentally challenged traditional theological accounts of creation and design in nature. Pauly's work represents the contemporary scientific perspective on biodiversity that continues to inform debates about divine action, natural theology, and the relationship between scientific and religious explanations of life's complexity.
