Editorial biography
Joan Roughgarden (1946-) is an American evolutionary biologist and ecologist who has made significant contributions to the dialogue between evolutionary science and Christian theology. Former professor at Stanford University, Roughgarden challenged conventional evolutionary theory while maintaining both scientific rigor and Christian faith. Her work "Evolution and Christian Faith: Reflections of an Evolutionary Biologist" (2006) argues for compatibility between evolutionary biology and Christianity, critiquing aspects of neo-Darwinism while proposing alternative models of evolution that emphasize cooperation over competition. As a transgender woman who transitioned in 1998, she has also written on sexuality and gender from both biological and theological perspectives. Roughgarden's unique position as a practicing scientist and committed Christian has enabled her to bridge the often-contentious divide between evolutionary science and religious belief, offering nuanced perspectives that resist both scientific materialism and anti-evolutionary fundamentalism.
