Editorial biography

Socrates (-469–-399) was an ancient Greek philosopher whose dialectical method and ethical teachings profoundly influenced Western thought on divine matters. Though he wrote nothing himself, his ideas survive through Plato's dialogues. Socrates challenged traditional Greek polytheism while maintaining belief in divine reality, speaking of his "daimonion" - an inner divine voice that guided his actions. His philosophical method sought universal definitions of virtue and justice, which he believed existed as divine standards. At his trial, he was charged with impiety and corrupting youth, yet maintained that his philosophical mission was divinely ordained. His famous dictum "the unexamined life is not worth living" reflected his belief that rational inquiry into ethical and spiritual matters was a sacred duty. His willingness to die rather than abandon philosophy demonstrated ultimate commitment to truth-seeking as a spiritual practice, establishing a model for subsequent philosophical engagement with religious questions.
