Editorial biography
Robert Spencer (born 1962) is an American author and commentator who has written extensively on Islam from a critical perspective. While not a philosopher or theologian in the traditional academic sense, Spencer's work engages with religious questions about Islamic theology, particularly concerning concepts of divine command, religious violence, and the nature of prophetic authority. His writings examine Islamic texts and traditions, arguing that certain theological doctrines within Islam inherently promote intolerance and violence. Though his interpretations are highly controversial and disputed by many Islamic scholars, his work has influenced popular discourse about religion, particularly regarding questions of how divine revelation relates to ethics, religious pluralism, and the compatibility of different theological systems with modern liberal values. Spencer directs Jihad Watch and has testified before the U.S. Congress on matters related to Islam.
