Editorial biography
Raymond E. Spier (1941-2012) was a British biotechnologist and ethicist who made significant contributions to the intersection of science, technology, and religious thought. As founding editor of the journal Science and Engineering Ethics, Spier explored how technological advancement challenges traditional conceptions of divine action and human responsibility. His work examined the ethical implications of biotechnology for theological anthropology, particularly regarding human enhancement and the boundaries of legitimate intervention in creation. While primarily focused on bioethics, Spier's writings engaged with questions about humanity's role as co-creators with God and the moral limits of scientific manipulation of nature. His interdisciplinary approach brought scientific perspectives to bear on classical theological problems, including the relationship between divine providence and human technological agency. Through his editorial work and publications, Spier facilitated crucial dialogue between scientific and religious communities on emerging ethical challenges.
