Editorial biography
Joan Strassman is an American evolutionary biologist who has made significant contributions to understanding cooperation, conflict, and altruism in biological systems, with implications for philosophical and theological discussions about design, purpose, and morality in nature. As the Charles Rebstock Professor of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis, her research on social evolution and cooperative behavior in organisms ranging from amoebas to social insects has informed debates about the origins of altruism and whether cooperative behaviors in nature reflect divine design or purely naturalistic processes. Her co-edited volume "In the Light of Evolution V: Cooperation and Conflict" (2011) examines the tension between cooperation and competition in evolutionary biology, contributing to discussions about theodicy and the problem of natural evil. Strassman's work challenges simplistic interpretations of nature as either wholly competitive or benevolently designed, offering nuanced perspectives relevant to natural theology and the philosophy of biology.
