Editorial biography
C.C.W. Taylor (1936-2007) was a distinguished British philosopher and classicist who made significant contributions to ancient philosophy, particularly in understanding Greek philosophical approaches to religion and theology. As Professor of Philosophy at Oxford University and Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Taylor specialized in Socratic and Platonic thought. His editorial work on the first volume of the Routledge History of Philosophy, "From the Beginning to Plato," provided crucial insights into early Greek philosophical conceptions of divinity, from pre-Socratic natural theology through Plato's sophisticated arguments for divine existence and nature. Taylor's scholarship illuminated how ancient Greek philosophers laid foundational groundwork for Western philosophical theology, examining their rational approaches to understanding the divine, the relationship between gods and morality, and the development of philosophical monotheism in Platonic thought.
