Editorial biography
Theodosius Dobzhansky (1900-1975) was a Ukrainian-American geneticist and evolutionary biologist whose work significantly influenced theological discourse on evolution and creation. His famous assertion "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution" (1973) became central to debates about God and science. Despite being a practicing Eastern Orthodox Christian, Dobzhansky rejected fundamentalist interpretations of Genesis, advocating for theistic evolution that reconciled scientific findings with religious faith. His writings explored how evolutionary theory could coexist with belief in God, arguing that evolution was the method through which God created life. His nuanced position challenged both scientific materialism and religious literalism, contributing to sophisticated theological discussions about divine action in nature. Dobzhansky's integration of rigorous scientific work with religious conviction made him an influential figure in 20th-century science-religion dialogue, particularly in discussions about how evolutionary biology relates to questions of purpose, design, and divine providence.
