Editorial biography

Thomas Gold (1920-2004) was an Austrian-American astrophysicist and cosmologist whose work indirectly influenced discussions about God and cosmology through his scientific theories. While primarily known for his contributions to astronomy, including the steady state theory of the universe (developed with Hermann Bondi and Fred Hoyle), Gold's cosmological work challenged prevailing models of cosmic origins and had implications for theological discussions about creation. His steady state theory, which proposed continuous creation of matter to maintain a constant density in an expanding universe, offered an alternative to the Big Bang model and eliminated the need for a singular moment of creation. Though Gold himself focused on scientific rather than theological questions, his theories contributed to 20th-century debates about the relationship between cosmology and religious accounts of creation, particularly regarding whether the universe required a beginning point that might imply a divine creator.
