Editorial biography
Wentzel van Huyssteen (1942-) is a South African-American philosophical theologian who has made significant contributions to the dialogue between theology and science. He served as the James I. McCord Professor of Theology and Science at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1992 to 2014. Van Huyssteen is best known for developing a postfoundationalist approach to theology that seeks to overcome the dichotomy between foundationalism and nonfoundationalism in religious epistemology. His interdisciplinary methodology emphasizes the shared resources of human rationality across different domains of knowledge while respecting their contextual differences. His major works include "Theology and the Justification of Faith" (1989) and "The Shaping of Rationality" (1999). As co-editor of the "Encyclopedia of Science and Religion" (2003), he helped establish key frameworks for understanding the complex relationship between scientific and religious worldviews, particularly regarding questions about human nature, divine action, and epistemological foundations.
