Editorial biography
Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was a Russian-American philosopher and novelist who developed Objectivism, a philosophical system advocating rational egoism and laissez-faire capitalism. While primarily known for political philosophy, Rand made significant contributions to debates about God and religion through her militant atheism. She argued that belief in God was incompatible with reason and human dignity, viewing faith as the negation of reason and religious morality as antithetical to human flourishing. Her novels Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead dramatized these themes, portraying religion as promoting self-sacrifice and mysticism over rational self-interest. Rand's arguments against theism centered on epistemological grounds, asserting that religious belief required the abandonment of logic and empirical evidence. Though her philosophical rigor has been questioned by academic philosophers, her popular influence on atheist thought and critique of religious ethics remains substantial in contemporary secular movements.
