Editorial biography
Mario Beauregard is a Canadian neuroscientist whose work bridges neuroscience and spirituality, challenging materialist interpretations of religious experience. In "The Spiritual Brain: A Neuroscientist's Case for the Existence of the Soul" (2007), co-authored with Denyse O'Leary, Beauregard argues against the reduction of spiritual experiences to mere brain activity. Drawing on his neuroimaging studies of Carmelite nuns during mystical experiences, he contends that while spiritual states correlate with neural activity, they cannot be fully explained by brain function alone. His research suggests that consciousness and spiritual experiences point to non-material dimensions of human existence. Beauregard's work has been influential in debates about the neural correlates of religious experience and the mind-brain relationship, offering empirical support for non-materialist perspectives on consciousness and challenging purely naturalistic accounts of spirituality.
