Editorial biography
John V. Canfield (1934-2022) was an American philosopher whose work significantly impacted philosophy of language, mind, and the interpretation of Wittgenstein. While not primarily known for direct contributions to philosophy of religion, his editorial work on the Routledge History of Philosophy Volume 10: Philosophy of Meaning, Knowledge and Value in the Twentieth Century (1997) included important coverage of twentieth-century developments in religious thought and the philosophical treatment of religious language. His expertise in Wittgenstein's philosophy provided crucial insights into how religious discourse functions within language games and forms of life. Canfield's analytical approach to meaning and language use influenced discussions about the nature of religious statements, their verification conditions, and the grammar of religious belief. His work helped clarify how twentieth-century philosophy approached questions about God through the lens of linguistic analysis.
