Editorial biography

Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) was an Austrian-British philosopher whose two distinct philosophical phases shaped 20th-century analytic thought. Trained in engineering before studying logic under Bertrand Russell at Cambridge, he produced the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921), which delimited meaningful discourse to propositions picturing facts and consigned ethics, aesthetics, and the religious to what 'shows itself' but cannot be said. His later work, especially the posthumous Philosophical Investigations (1953), abandoned the picture theory for an account of language as embedded in 'forms of life' and 'language-games'. On Certainty (1969) examined the bedrock framework propositions presupposed by any inquiry. Though personally preoccupied with religious and ethical seriousness—shaped by readings of Tolstoy, Augustine, and Kierkegaard—Wittgenstein never offered a systematic theology. His remarks on religious belief have spawned 'Wittgensteinian fideism' (associated with D. Z. Phillips, Norman Malcolm, Peter Winch), which treats religious discourse as an autonomous grammar irreducible to factual claims. Critics such as Kai Nielsen and J. L. Mackie charge this view with insulating religion from rational critique and distorting believers' truth-claims. Others, including Cora Diamond and Stephen Mulhall, dispute the fideist reading, emphasizing Wittgenstein's broader therapeutic aims. His influence on philosophy of religion, alongside his impact on philosophy of language, mind, and mathematics, remains contested but pervasive.
