Editorial biography
Eric J. Chaisson (born 1946) is an American astrophysicist and science educator who has made significant contributions to the interdisciplinary study of cosmic evolution and its philosophical implications. As an astrophysicist at Harvard University and director of the Wright Center at Tufts University, Chaisson developed a comprehensive framework examining the increase of complexity in the universe from the Big Bang to the present. His works "Cosmic Evolution: The Rise of Complexity in Nature" (2001) and "Epic of Evolution: Seven Ages of the Cosmos" (2006) present a naturalistic account of cosmic history that addresses questions traditionally reserved for theology, including purpose, meaning, and humanity's place in the universe. While not directly engaging in theology, Chaisson's scientific narrative of cosmic evolution offers an alternative to religious cosmologies, contributing to discussions about teleology and the apparent fine-tuning of the universe without invoking supernatural explanations.
