Editorial biography
Philip R. Davies (1945-2018) was a British biblical scholar and pioneer of the "minimalist" or "Copenhagen School" approach to ancient Israelite history and biblical studies. Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield, Davies fundamentally challenged traditional readings of biblical texts and their historical reliability. His work on prophetic literature, including "Among the Prophets: Language, Image and Structure in the Prophetic Writings" (1993), applied literary-critical methods to demonstrate the constructed nature of prophetic texts and their ideological functions. While not directly engaging philosophical arguments about God's existence, Davies's historical-critical approach significantly impacted how scholars understand the development of monotheism and religious thought in ancient Israel. His methodology questioned the historical basis of many biblical narratives that traditionally supported theological claims, thereby influencing contemporary debates about the relationship between historical criticism and religious belief.
