Editorial biography
Martin Hägglund is a Swedish philosopher and literary theorist who serves as Professor of Comparative Literature and Humanities at Yale University. Born in 1976, he is best known for his innovative work on atheism, temporality, and the philosophy of Jacques Derrida. His book "Radical Atheism: Derrida and the Time of Life" (2008) advances a groundbreaking interpretation of deconstruction, arguing that Derrida's philosophy entails a fundamental atheism based on the constitutive finitude of life rather than on metaphysical claims about God's existence or non-existence. Hägglund contends that desire for immortality is internally contradictory since temporal finitude is the condition for anything we value. His work has significantly influenced contemporary debates in continental philosophy of religion by demonstrating how deconstruction challenges both traditional theism and conventional atheism, proposing instead that mortality and temporal succession are essential to meaningful existence.
