Editorial biography
Steven Horst is an American philosopher whose work bridges philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and philosophy of religion. His major contribution lies in developing a post-reductionist framework that challenges the dominant reductionist paradigms in both philosophy of mind and science. In Beyond Reduction: Philosophy of Mind and Post-Reductionist Philosophy of Science (2007), Horst argues that the failure of reductionism in these domains has significant implications for understanding religious and theological claims. He contends that if reductionism fails to explain mental phenomena and scientific theories themselves resist reduction, then reductionist critiques of religious experience and theological concepts lose much of their force. His work provides philosophical space for non-reductive approaches to understanding religious phenomena, consciousness, and the relationship between science and religion. Horst's post-reductionist philosophy offers a sophisticated framework for defending the intellectual legitimacy of theological discourse in dialogue with contemporary philosophy of mind and science.
