Editorial biography

Ludwig Feuerbach (1804–1872) was a German philosopher and central figure of the Young Hegelian movement whose anthropological critique of religion shaped modern atheism. Initially a student of theology at Heidelberg, he moved to Berlin to study under Hegel, then turned increasingly against speculative idealism and Christian theology. His anonymous Thoughts on Death and Immortality (1830) cost him an academic career, and he spent most of his life writing independently in Bruckberg. In The Essence of Christianity (1841), Feuerbach argued that the predicates of God—love, wisdom, power, personality—are alienated projections of humanity's own species-essence (Gattungswesen). Theology, on this view, is unconscious anthropology: religion expresses real human longings in inverted form, and overcoming it requires reclaiming these powers for humanity itself. Later works, including The Essence of Religion (1846) and Lectures on the Essence of Religion (1851), extended the projection thesis to nature and dependence. Feuerbach decisively influenced Marx and Engels, who nonetheless criticized his ahistorical, contemplative materialism in the Theses on Feuerbach (1845); Stirner attacked his lingering humanist essentialism, and Nietzsche and Freud absorbed and transformed his projection account. Theologians such as Karl Barth engaged him as the paradigmatic anti-theologian, while Hans Küng and others treat his critique as a permanent challenge to honest theology. He remains a touchstone for debates over religion as wish-fulfillment and ideological alienation.
