Editorial biography

John Allen Paulos (1945-) is an American mathematician and popular science writer who has contributed to the philosophical critique of religious arguments through mathematical and logical analysis. Educated at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1974, Paulos became a professor at Temple University. While primarily known for his work on mathematical literacy, including bestsellers like "Innumeracy" (1988), Paulos entered the philosophy of religion debate with "Irreligion: A Mathematician Explains Why the Arguments for God Just Don't Add Up" (2008). In this work, he applies mathematical reasoning and probability theory to systematically examine and critique classical arguments for God's existence, including the ontological, cosmological, and design arguments. His contribution to the God debate is distinctive in bringing rigorous mathematical analysis to bear on traditional theological claims, demonstrating how mathematical illiteracy can lead to flawed religious reasoning. Paulos represents a contemporary strand of scientific atheism that employs technical expertise to challenge religious belief systems.
