Editorial biography
Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) was a French Protestant philosopher and critic whose skeptical approach profoundly influenced Enlightenment thought on religious tolerance and the problem of evil. His monumental Historical and Critical Dictionary (1697) employed erudite scholarship and ironic commentary to undermine dogmatic certainty in theology and philosophy. Bayle's examination of the problem of evil, particularly in his article on the Manicheans, challenged traditional theodicies by arguing that reason alone cannot reconcile God's omnipotence and benevolence with the existence of evil. His defense of the rights of erring conscience and advocacy for religious tolerance, developed while in exile in Rotterdam, established principles crucial to later secularism. Though maintaining nominal Calvinist faith, Bayle's relentless application of critical reason to religious questions earned him both accusations of atheism and recognition as a pivotal figure in the development of religious skepticism and the philosophical foundations of toleration.
