Editorial biography
Robert W. Jenson (1930-2017) was an influential American Lutheran theologian whose work profoundly shaped contemporary systematic theology and ecumenical dialogue. Educated at Luther College, Luther Seminary, and the University of Heidelberg, where he studied under Karl Barth and Ernst Fuchs, Jenson developed a distinctive theological voice that bridged Protestant and Catholic traditions. His magnum opus, the two-volume Systematic Theology (1997-1999), presents a thoroughly trinitarian account of Christian doctrine, emphasizing God's temporal involvement in creation and history. Jenson's theology is characterized by his rejection of timeless metaphysics in favor of understanding God as "identified by and with the particular plotted sequence of events that make the narrative of Israel and her Christ." His contributions to the doctrine of the Trinity, ecclesiology, and theological aesthetics have been particularly significant. Co-founding the Center for Catholic and Evangelical Theology, Jenson championed ecumenical theology throughout his career at institutions including Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg and Princeton University.
