Editorial biography
Rodney Stark (1934-2022) was an American sociologist of religion who challenged conventional wisdom about religious history and the relationship between faith and reason. His groundbreaking work "The Rise of Christianity" (1996) applied sociological methods to explain Christianity's growth through social networks rather than mass conversions. In "For the Glory of God" (2003) and "The Victory of Reason" (2005), Stark argued that Christianity, particularly medieval Catholicism, fostered scientific progress and rational inquiry, contradicting narratives of inherent conflict between religion and science. His "rational choice theory" of religion proposed that religious behavior follows cost-benefit calculations, treating faith commitments as rational decisions rather than irrational impulses. Through extensive historical analysis, Stark defended monotheism's positive contributions to Western civilization, challenging secularization theories and demonstrating religion's enduring vitality in modern societies.
