Editorial biography
Terence Penelhum (1929-2018) was a Canadian philosopher who made significant contributions to the philosophy of religion, particularly concerning the rationality and ethics of religious belief. Educated at Edinburgh and Oxford, he spent most of his career at the University of Calgary. Penelhum's work critically examined the epistemological foundations of religious belief, exploring the tension between faith and reason. In "The Ethics of Religious Belief" and other works, he developed sophisticated analyses of fideism, natural theology, and the problem of religious diversity. He argued for a moderate position that acknowledged both the limitations of rational proofs for God's existence and the legitimacy of faith-based commitments. Penelhum's nuanced approach to religious epistemology, influenced by Hume and Pascal, helped shape contemporary debates about the rationality of religious belief and the proper relationship between philosophical argument and religious commitment.
