Editorial biography
Anthony C. Thiselton (1937-2023) was a distinguished British theologian and biblical scholar who made significant contributions to hermeneutics and the philosophy of religion. Educated at London, Sheffield, and Nottingham, he served as Professor of Christian Theology at the University of Nottingham and later at the University of Chester. Thiselton's work bridged biblical studies, systematic theology, and contemporary philosophy, particularly in his engagement with speech-act theory, Wittgenstein, and continental philosophy. His major works include "The Two Horizons" (1980), which revolutionized biblical hermeneutics by introducing Gadamer's philosophical insights, and "New Horizons in Hermeneutics" (1992). His "Concise Encyclopedia of the Philosophy of Religion" (2002) demonstrates his ability to make complex philosophical and theological concepts accessible while maintaining scholarly rigor. Thiselton's approach emphasized the importance of understanding texts within their historical contexts while addressing contemporary theological questions.
