Editorial biography
Timothy R. Phillips was an American evangelical theologian associated with Wheaton College, where he taught systematic theology. He is best known as co-editor, with Dennis L. Okholm, of a series of volumes that brought evangelical theology into dialogue with broader currents in late-twentieth-century thought, including 'More Than One Way? Four Views on Salvation in a Pluralistic World' (1995), 'Christian Apologetics in the Postmodern World' (1995), and 'The Nature of Confession: Evangelicals and Postliberals in Conversation' (1996). These edited volumes used the multi-views format to stage disagreements between exclusivist, inclusivist, and pluralist positions on the question of salvation outside Christianity, and to engage postliberal and postmodern interlocutors such as George Lindbeck and Stanley Hauerwas. Phillips's own contributions defended a broadly classical evangelical position while taking seriously the challenges posed by religious diversity and non-foundationalist epistemology. His scholarly work also included historical studies on the theology of Charles Hodge and Princeton theology. Phillips died unexpectedly in 2000, cutting short a career that had positioned him as a bridge figure between confessional evangelicalism and academic engagement with pluralism and postmodernity.
