John Hick
جون هيك
Editorial biography
John Hick (1922–2012) was a British philosopher of religion whose work decisively shaped late twentieth-century debates on religious pluralism, theodicy, and the epistemology of religious experience. Educated at Edinburgh, Oxford, and Cambridge, and ordained as a Presbyterian minister, Hick held chairs at Birmingham, Claremont, and elsewhere. In Faith and Knowledge (1957) he developed a notion of 'experiencing-as' that frames religious cognition; in Evil and the God of Love (1966) he revived an Irenaean 'soul-making' theodicy as a counter to the Augustinian free-will tradition. His An Interpretation of Religion (1989), Gifford Lectures, articulated his mature pluralist hypothesis: the great traditions are different culturally conditioned responses to a single ineffable transcendent Real, with Kantian phenomenal/noumenal distinctions doing the central work. The Myth of God Incarnate (1977), which he co-edited, provoked sharp controversy for treating incarnational language as mythological rather than literal. Critics including Alvin Plantinga, Gavin D'Costa, Keith Ward, William Lane Craig, and Peter van Inwagen challenged him on grounds ranging from the coherence of the noumenal Real, to charges of covert exclusivism, to weaknesses in his theodicy and Christology. Hick also defended 'eschatological verification' against logical-positivist critiques of religious language. His influence on philosophy of religion, interfaith theology, and inclusivist Christian thought remains substantial, even as pluralism continues to be widely contested.
