Editorial biography
Kenneth Weiss is an American biological anthropologist and geneticist whose work has implications for philosophical discussions about design, purpose, and naturalistic explanations in evolution. As Evan Pugh Professor Emeritus at Pennsylvania State University, Weiss has critically examined genetic determinism and the limits of evolutionary theory. His book "Genetics and the Logic of Evolution" (2004), co-authored with Anne Buchanan, challenges simplistic gene-centered views of evolution and argues for a more complex understanding of biological causation. While not directly addressing theology, Weiss's work on the non-deterministic nature of genetic systems and the role of chance in evolution contributes to debates about teleology and design in nature. His critique of reductionist approaches in evolutionary biology has relevance for discussions about whether evolutionary processes are compatible with purposive or theistic interpretations of nature.
