Editorial biography
Joseph Wheless (1868-1950) was an American lawyer and freethinker who became prominent in early 20th century skeptical literature through his critical examinations of biblical texts and Christian theology. His major work, "Is It God's Word? An Exposition of the Fables and Mythology of the Bible and the Impostures of Theology" (1926), systematically challenged the divine inspiration and historical accuracy of biblical narratives. Drawing on biblical criticism, comparative mythology, and historical analysis, Wheless argued that the Bible contained numerous contradictions, borrowed myths, and fabrications. His polemical style and comprehensive cataloging of perceived biblical inconsistencies made him a significant figure in American freethought circles. While his scholarship was often criticized by theologians for its hostile tone and selective use of sources, his work contributed to popular skeptical discourse about religious authority and biblical literalism during the interwar period.
