Editorial biography
Wolfhart Pannenberg (1928-2014) was a German Lutheran theologian who developed an influential systematic theology grounded in history and reason. Professor at the University of Munich from 1968 to 1994, Pannenberg argued that theology must be a public discipline open to critical examination rather than based solely on faith commitments. His major work, the three-volume Systematic Theology (1988-1993), presents God as the all-determining reality whose existence can be provisionally demonstrated through historical analysis and philosophical reflection. Pannenberg's theology of history emphasized that God's reality is revealed proleptically in Jesus Christ's resurrection, which he argued was a historical event verifiable by historical-critical methods. He contributed significantly to the dialogue between theology and science, proposing that theological claims about God must cohere with scientific knowledge. His work on divine action, eschatology, and the Trinity influenced both Protestant and Catholic thought, making him one of the most important systematic theologians of the twentieth century.
