Editorial biography
Chandra Wickramasinghe (1939-) is a Sri Lankan-British mathematician, astronomer, and astrobiologist who has made significant contributions to debates about cosmic design and the origin of life. A long-time collaborator with Fred Hoyle, Wickramasinghe developed the theory of panspermia, proposing that life on Earth originated from microorganisms or chemical precursors present in outer space. This work has theological implications, challenging conventional views about the uniqueness of Earth and raising questions about divine action in creation. While not primarily a theologian, his scientific theories have engaged with intelligent design discussions and the anthropic principle. His books, including "A Journey with Fred Hoyle" and "The Search for Cosmic Life," explore the intersection of cosmology, biology, and philosophical questions about purpose in the universe. His work represents an important voice in science-religion dialogue, particularly regarding questions of cosmic purpose and the conditions necessary for life.
