Editorial biography
Colin Gunton (1941–2003) was a British Reformed theologian who served as Professor of Christian Doctrine at King's College London from 1984 until his death. A leading voice in modern trinitarian theology, Gunton developed a theological program centered on the doctrine of the Trinity as the foundation for understanding creation, redemption, and human community. His influential works include The One, the Three and the Many (1993), which critiqued Western individualism through trinitarian categories, and The Triune Creator (1998), exploring creation theology through a trinitarian lens. Gunton emphasized the particularity of Christ while maintaining the universal scope of redemption, and argued for recovering the social dimensions of the Trinity against modalistic tendencies in Western theology. His engagement with patristic sources, particularly the Cappadocians, combined with dialogue with contemporary philosophy and science, established him as a major figure in the renewal of trinitarian doctrine in late twentieth-century theology.
