Editorial biography
Augustine of Hippo (354-430) was a North African theologian and philosopher whose works profoundly shaped Western Christianity and philosophy. Born in Thagaste, he converted to Christianity in 386 after years of philosophical searching through Manichaeism and Neoplatonism. As Bishop of Hippo (395-430), Augustine produced over 100 works addressing fundamental questions about God, human nature, and evil. His Confessions (397-400) pioneered theological autobiography while exploring God's relationship to time and creation. The City of God (413-426) developed a theology of history and politics grounded in divine providence. His De Trinitate (399-419) offered sophisticated analogies for understanding the Trinity through human psychology. Augustine's synthesis of Platonic philosophy with Christian theology established frameworks for medieval scholasticism, while his writings on grace, predestination, and original sin shaped centuries of theological debate about divine sovereignty and human freedom.
