Editorial biography
Francis Schaeffer (1912-1984) was an American evangelical theologian and philosopher who significantly influenced twentieth-century Protestant thought on the relationship between Christianity and culture. Educated at Westminster Theological Seminary, he established L'Abri Fellowship in Switzerland in 1955, creating an intellectual community for discussing faith and philosophy. Schaeffer argued that modern Western culture's rejection of absolute truth and embrace of relativism stemmed from abandoning its Christian foundations. His major works, including "The God Who Is There" (1968) and "He Is There and He Is Not Silent" (1972), developed a presuppositional apologetic approach asserting that only the Christian worldview provides a coherent basis for rationality, morality, and meaning. He critiqued both secular humanism and theological liberalism while defending the intellectual credibility of historic Christianity. Schaeffer's integration of philosophy, art, and theology made evangelical Christianity more intellectually engaged with contemporary culture.
