Editorial biography
Gavin D'Costa (1958–present) is a British Catholic theologian and Professor of Catholic Theology at the University of Bristol. A leading voice in contemporary theology of religions, D'Costa has made significant contributions to debates about religious pluralism, Christian particularism, and interfaith dialogue. His work critically engages with pluralist theologians like John Hick while defending a post-Vatican II Catholic approach to religious diversity. Major works include Theology and Religious Pluralism (1986), The Meeting of Religions and the Trinity (2000), and Christianity and World Religions (2009). D'Costa argues for a trinitarian theology that maintains Christian distinctiveness while remaining open to truth in other religions. His scholarship bridges systematic theology, philosophy of religion, and practical questions of interfaith relations, offering sophisticated theological responses to religious diversity that avoid both relativism and exclusivism. He has also written extensively on Vatican II's teachings on other religions and their theological implications.
