Editorial biography
Lester L. Grabbe (1945-) is a prominent biblical scholar and historian specializing in Second Temple Judaism and ancient Israelite religion. Educated at Harvard Divinity School, he served as Professor of Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism at the University of Hull until his retirement. His extensive scholarship examines prophecy, apocalypticism, and the historical development of Jewish religious thought. In "Constructs of Prophecy in the Former and Later Prophets and Other Texts" (2019), Grabbe analyzes the literary and theological evolution of prophetic literature, challenging traditional assumptions about prophecy's nature and function in ancient Israel. His work demonstrates how prophetic texts were constructed and reconstructed over time, contributing significantly to understanding how concepts of divine communication and religious authority developed within biblical traditions. Grabbe's historical-critical approach has influenced contemporary debates about revelation, religious epistemology, and the relationship between historical context and theological claims.
